Suppose you are the leader of a small country with a developing economy in Latin America. You want your country to have a greater voice in the global economy. What organization should you join? A. World Trade Organization B. International Monetary Fund C. Group of 20 D. European Union
D, i think ;D
The WTO is the only one open to you. You could be a client of the IMF, but you probably don't have enough money to be a donor. The Group of 20 is by definition a group of 20 self-selected nations; you'd have to be invited to join. The EU requires you to be in Europe, and you're in Central or South America. The WTO doesn't really give you a "voice" in the global economy -- whatever the heck THAT means anyway -- it just gives you a good forum for working out trade deals with other nations.
But your all-around best possible course is to negotiate bilateral trade agreements with your neighbors, and, second, try to join NAFTA.
Because with a "voice" in the global economy and $3, you can buy a cup of coffee.
wrooong, its C. Group of 20
