consider the matrix (H-(1/n)II) where H = the hat matrix and II = the matrix of ones. can someone show me why this is idempotent? that is, can someone please show me how (H-(1/n)II)^2 = (H-(1/n)II) . it is known that H is already symmetric and idempotent. Thank you !
