The Frostburg-Truth bus travels from Frostburg Mall through the City Center to Sojourner Truth Park. The mall is 3 miles west and 2 miles south of the City Center. Truth Park is 4 miles east and 5 miles north of the Center. How far is it from Truth Park to the Mall to the nearest tenth of a mile?

SOMEONE HELP PLEASE!

OpenStudy (markrijckenberg):

Convert the distances to x,y coordinates and then apply trigonometry formula's....

see the image..tell if its not clear

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So I just add the 25 + 16?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

add 5 +\[\sqrt{25+16}\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

still don't understand

OpenStudy (markrijckenberg):

@akash809: how did you get 5 as the distance between mall and city center? That number only seems right if the vertical distance from the center was 4 instead of 2....

OpenStudy (markrijckenberg):

Distance between mall and city center is square root of 13, not the number 5 (I think)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sorry messed up that it should sqrt (9+4) + sqrt (25+16)

OpenStudy (markrijckenberg):

@Kassandrac: to calculate the distance from the mall to the city center (and from the park to city center), you need to apply the Pythagorean theorem http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pythagorean_theorem

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes know that ...just miscalculated it..

OpenStudy (markrijckenberg):

Yes, I know you do. I was addressing Kassandrac, who did not understand.....

OpenStudy (anonymous):

u should have used @

OpenStudy (markrijckenberg):

I did use @Kassandrac. Looks like you are in a bad mood today.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sorry...yes i am ...openstudy took all my medals away and decreased my score by 20...and say they lost their data for that time...crap

OpenStudy (markrijckenberg):

OK, but please don't vent it out on me. I'm here to help, not here to get critized for no reason.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok,mark..
