Solve 5 – 3x = 8

OpenStudy (anonymous):

subtract the 5 from 8, divide RHS by -3. x = -1

So in this problem what we want to do is let the x be all alone. To do that we will first subtract 5 on both sides, giving us -3x=3. Then we divide -3 on both sides so we can isolate the x, and we get x=-1.
