a rectangle drawn on the board is reshaped into a square. if the rectangle has a length of 12in and a width of 8 in. what is the area of the square?

OpenStudy (aripotta):

guess that would depend on how it was reshaped. if you kept the measure 12, the area would be 144in. if you kept the measure 8, the area would be 64in.

thank you

Directrix (directrix):

The rectangle has perimeter 40 units. [ 2*8 + 2*12] When the 40 units are reshaped to form a square, each side of the square is 10 units long. [ A square is equilateral.] The area of a square is found by multiplying length times width or, in this case, side times side since the sides are equal in length. The area of the square is 10*10 = 100 square units.
