factor: 10x^2 + x -21

Parth (parthkohli):

-21 * 10 = -210

Parth (parthkohli):

Find two numbers that add up to 1 and their product is -210.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that is not factoring,,,

Parth (parthkohli):

Yes, it is. We are trying to split the middle term.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i have so far: (2x + 3) (5x-7) but i don't get why the outer numbers do not add up to the x.

Parth (parthkohli):

That's the correct factorization!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so why do the outer numbers not add up the the x?

Parth (parthkohli):

They add up to the coefficient of \(x\) if and ONLY if you have the factorization in the form\[(x + \cdots)(x + \cdots)\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh ty

Parth (parthkohli):

You're welcome ;)
