I think it might mean like a metaphorical "fight" between the frontal and temporal lobes. Like, you know how sparing is another word for fighting?

I would have guessed differently and said that those lobes seemed smaller than they should be. 

I don't think it could possibly mean fighting because of the word "relative" in there
