What is meant by double fertilization?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the question is not clear but i think you mean the fertilization occurring in plants. if it is so the double fertilization comes from the fact that the male pollen gets to the female gamete with two nuclei. i don't remember the fenomenon in detail (it is not my field) but i remember that one nucleus melts with the female gamete originating the zygote, the other one stays atonoumus and works to mantain the zygote in the first phases of its life. details apart, the name "double fertilization" comes from this progression of phases. if you're interested in more details you could find this page interesting http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Double_fertilization
