$$3x^2-2+5x^2+5x-1=8x^2+5x-3$$

write it vertically matching like terms

  3x`2           -2
  5x`2  +5x   -1 now add
8x`2   +5x  -3  is the answer

now if the center sign is a negative make the second terms opposite first then add
