What is the value of the x variable in the solution to the following system of equations? 7x - 2y = 21 4x + y = 57

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[x=\frac{ 2y }{ 7 }+3\] and \[x=\frac{ 57 }{ 4 }-\frac{ y }{ 4 }\]

Hope I helped :) Best response me?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol its funny cus nun of those are in the answer box

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Really?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ill show yu the answers .

OpenStudy (anonymous):

21 -21 9 -9

OpenStudy (asnaseer):

one way to solve this is to use the substitution method - have you heard of it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

cant remember

OpenStudy (asnaseer):

you are given two equations with two unknowns: 1) 7x - 2y = 21 2) 4x + y = 57 first, use the second equation to get an expression for y in terms of x - can you do that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

nope

OpenStudy (asnaseer):

so what methods have you been taught for this type of problem?

OpenStudy (asnaseer):

I would suggest you read through this to gain an understanding of the substitution method and then you you try and attempt to solve this question: http://www.basic-mathematics.com/substitution-method.html if you are still stuck after reviewing the method then let me know and I will try and explain it.
