|-x cubed| - 989 = -4364 pls help ASAP.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i couldve swore i just saw this question 10 minutes ago

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I sorry I did it wrong it's an absolute value can you show me how to do it.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

And check.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh i see, no one answer it first lets just simplify the equation by adding 989 to both sides to get rid of the -989 from the left side |-x cubed| = -4364+989 now understand that the solution for an absolute value will always be positive so |1|=1 |-100|=100 you can never get a negative answer from an absolute value, unless the negative sign is outside the absolute value bars -|1|=-1 -|100|=-100 the negative sign acts like a (-1*)... so remembering pemdas, the absolute value bars act like parenthesis now back to the question at hand |-x ^3| = -4364+989 since 4364 is much larger than 989, we know that the right side will be a negative number now remember, the solution to an absolute value can never be negative, unless the negative is outside the bars ( which it isnt) thus meaning there is no solution to this problem

Directrix (directrix):

From completeidiot's words, algebraically, |-x cubed| - 989 = -4364 |x| cubed = -4364 + 989 |x| cubed = -3375 |x| cannot be negative; therefore, |x|^3 cannot be negative and there is no solution.
