Solve the inequality |x+4|+|x-1|>5. Can someone please teach how to solve this.. P.S: im not for the answer, i need the knowledge..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

there might be 4 cases there to solve, they are (x+4)+(x-1)>5 (x+4)-(x-1)>5 -(x+4)+(x-1)>5 -(x+4)-(x-1)>5 in the first case 2x+3>5 => 2x>2 x>1 in the second x+4-x+1>5 => 5>5 F in the third also fails 4th -x-4-x+1>5 -2x-3>5 2x+3<-5 2x<-8 x<-4 so the answer will be x<-4 or x>2

where did u get x>2?? n finding x for every inequality to prove what? wat do u mean by fail? do u mean tat the x that we get is suppose to b greater than 5?
