If a number is negative and is raised to a power how do you know if the answer is going to be negative or positive?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if the power is even it will be positive

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if the power is even then answer is ppositive if odd then negative

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it depends upon power !

OpenStudy (anonymous):

let me show what I mean I don't think I wrote the question right so -6^3 is going to be negative and -5^3 would be negative also or ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

negative if the number is actually negative and have odd power

OpenStudy (anonymous):

obviously it would be negative as the power is odd :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so -5^2 would be positive and -5^5 would be negative

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i get it thank you!

OpenStudy (anonymous):
