x/4 + 3x = ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

make 3x a fraction by multiplying it by 4/4 (you can do this because 4/4=1 which means essentially you are multiplying by 1). This will give you x/4 + 12x/4. Then just add the numerators across to get 13x/4.
