all you have to do when working with a problem like this is assign each person or whatever you are working with a variable. use the same one like x for both jody and jen.

yep and once you get x, go back into your assigned variables and plug it in to get the amount of money they spent. so x is jen so once you get x that is how much money jen spent. and if you do 4(x) that is how much jody spent.
