arking in a studnet lot costs $1 for the first half hour and $1.50 for each hour thereafter. A partial hour is charged the same as a full hour. What is the longest time that a student can park in this lot for $8?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Since it is $1 for the first half hour that gives you 30 minutes, Then, it is $1.50 for the next hour which puts you at $2.50 and 1 hour and 30 minutes, Then, for another $1.50 you are at $4.00 and 2 hours and 30 minutes. Again, $1.50 for another hour so you are at $5.50 and 3 hours and 30 minutes. Again, $1.50 to give you another hours putting you at $7.00 and giving you 4 hours and 30 minutes. Since you cannot afford to pay another hour, the longest you can be parked in that lot is for: 4 Hours and 30 Minutes.

That would translate to 4.5 hours correct? Because for some reason I keep getting it wrong.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes, 4.5 Hours or 4 hours and 30 minutes would both be correct.
