I think it is a.
because it takes data from the computer(digital) and sends it over the phone system(analog?)

@invidos: That would be wrong, because when it comes back to the computer, it has to convert from analog to digital. But I'd go with 'c.'. Not very sure, however. :|

the only thing I can think of would be to power itself but that is the work of the transformer

I was going with 'c' because AFAIK, both the digital and analog signals are AC and there'd be no need to convert. I could be wrong, though. Not sure if the digital signal is DC.
