write an equation of the tangent to the graph of f(x)=2/x at x=1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well you have to take the derivative of f(x) can you do it ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i got

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[\frac{ -2 }{ x^2}\] lol is that right

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes its good.. so the slope of the tangent to the graph at x =1 will be -2 (you just plug x = 1 in the derivative)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

now since we need a point on the tangent graph as well (for its equation) we can get that point from the original graph f(x) since the tangent graph touches it at x =1 what is the y value of this point ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

good.. so now we have (1,2) and slope -2 can you find the equation of the tangent line ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

y = -2x + 4 (: gracias

great yw :)
