Manny and Emma are both competing in a long jump competition at their school. Manny can jump four fifths of the distance that Emma can jump. Manny can jump 40 inches. How far can Emma jump? A. 40.8 inches B. 50 inches C. 32 inches D. 39.2 inches

Any ideas? What is 4/5 of 40 inches?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

8 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1/5 of 40 is 8. 1/5 just means dividing something by 5. Like if you have a cake and five friends, each gets 1/5 of the cake (if you eat it all). So 4/5 is 4 of the 5 parts of the whole. In your problem, if 1/5 of 40 is 8, then 4/5 is 4 parts that same size, or 4 x 8 = 32. Does that make sense?

Yeah it does actually. Eventually it all equals out to 32 inches. Thanks a lot.
