At noon, your family leaves Louisville on a trip to memphis driving 40 miles per hour.Your uncle leaves Memphis to come to Louisville 2 hours later. He is taking the same route and is driving 60 miles per hour. The two cities are 380 miles apart. At what time do the cars meet?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

before uncle starts driving, the family already drove for 2 hours 40mph

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so the family and the uncle, at the start of the 3rd hour mark, are 300 miles away from each other.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

family is driving 40mph and uncle is driving 60mph. added up, they're going towards each other 100mph.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thus 300/100 = 3 hours. it takes 3 hours for them to meet each other.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

since the family left at noon, they will meet each other at 5:00 pm.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wowow, thanks dude.Your such a lifesaver! :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):
