two cars leave chicago, one traveling north and the other south. the car going north is traveling at 62 mph and the car going south is traveling at 68 mph. how long before they are 585 miles apart? a) write an algebraic expression for the distance traveled by the car going north. b) write an algebraic expression for the distance traveled by the car going south. c) write an algebraic expression for the total distance traveled by the two cars. d) write an equation to answer the question.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

a) d = 62t where d is distance is t is time in hrs. if you write down your units you see that the hours cancel and you are left with a distance unit so you are correct.

Do you understand what I did for a) ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do the same for b now. I'll wait

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okayy got it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

now for the total distance I would write it with d subscript total and just add those equations together and simplify

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Then for d) substitute 585 for total distance and solve for time

good luck in your studies
