Hi everyone, what does it mean when they say x is evenly divided by y?

Parth (parthkohli):

This means that \(x\) is \(\textbf{divisible}\) by \(y\).

Parth (parthkohli):

If you want a rigorous definition,\[\text{x is evenly divided by y}\implies x = ny \wedge n \in \mathbb{Z}\]

Parth (parthkohli):

For example, 4 is divisible by 2. 6 is divisible by 3. 100 is divisible by 25. etc

@ParthKohli : Heheh, thanks. I thought the word "evenly" has something to do with even number :)

Parth (parthkohli):

You're welcome!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@ParthKohli : Z is integer?

Parth (parthkohli):

Yeah, \(\mathbb{Z}\) is the set of integers in set theory.

OpenStudy (jiteshmeghwal9):

it is said that y is a factor of x
