Which statement shows a difference between medians and altitudes of all triangles? A. A median divides the vertex of the triangle into two angles of equal measure, but an altitude does not. B. An altitude divides the vertex of the triangle into two angles of equal measure, but a median does not. C. An altitude connects the vertex of the triangle to the opposite side dividing the side into equal segments, but a median does not. D.An altitude divides the area of a triangle into equal parts, but a median divides it into two parts in which the area of one part is twice the area of the other.
I think it's C, is that right?
hi.
i would ask you to consider the definition of a median and then the definition of an altitude.
okay, these are my definitions: the altitude of a triangle is a line segment connecting a vertex to the line containing the opposite side and perpendicular to that side. A median is a segment connecting any vertex of a triangle to the midpoint of the opposite side.
I thought it was C for my original answer...
right. now lets look at the median. it connects a vertex to the midpoint of the opposite side
the only one that says that is C but it says "An altitude connects the vertex of the triangle to the opposite side dividing the side into equal segments, but a median does not"
so, that cant be correct, right?
you are right. that would be incorrect
but wait, if the definitions of altitude is that it connects a vertex to the line containing the opposite side and perpendicular to that side, would that make C correct? i'm confused...
an altitude does not necessarily divide the opposite side into two equal segments... only a median does that
okay, okay, would it be B?
I can't see it being anything else?
i think you are right, except there is a typo...the median and altitude should be switched. it might just be a bad problem. that happens.
so, C is the correct answer if you switch the terms altitude and median
yeah, I think it is, I get a lot of glitches on my software, it tends to happen a lot... but thanks for ur help, I really appreciate it! :)
okay, ill go with C, hopefully the teacher will see the typo
you are welcome. nothing else works here. all the other answers are somewhere between implausible and ridiculous. Nice work renee. Is there anything else i can help you with?
you can always point it out to him/her
yeah, actually I have a couple more questions, should I post them individually, u can get more points that way??
no, if i can help you with them too, I will. fire away
The figure below shows triangle PQR with a circumscribed circle of radius 7 inches. http://assets.openstudy.com/updates/attachments/505b3fd4e4b0cc122893ea30-renee99-1348157619927-456845882011121142pm1902385864.png Which segment must measure 7 inches? A. segment RO B. segment RQ C. the angle bisectors D. the perpendicular bisectors
Im actually gonna re-post this one, just to get it on the top of the list... look for it there okay?
