Geometry Help anyone?!....Which transformation will map Figure H onto Figure H’? A. reflection across the y-axis B. vertical translation of 10 units C. vertical translation of 15 units D. reflection across the x-axis

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if you look at the picture which axis is inbetween the two images?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Christawna~Marie are you there?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the x axis

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so the answer is D? ..but why how come its not a translation but rather a reflection? can you explain please?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if you look in a mirror what do you see?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

a relection...but it also looks like a translation...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so in other words...how can I tell the difference?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

a translation is when you take something and move it elsewhere so efectivly a reflection is also a translation.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the answer is B. B. vertical translation of 10 units. It cannot be a reflection, note that H has a vertex at (4,2) and the reflection about X-axis will have vertex at (4,-2) but the figure H prime (the bottom one) has a vertex at (4,-3). Thus on reflection the figures won't overlap. Only way to do that is to slide down the figure above 10 units to the bottom.

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

it cannot be a reflectio cuz, in mirror if u see, preimage is at same distance from the image. but here thats not the case..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ahhh, many pardons i did not look at the picture in detail.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay...I see what you mean about the reflection @pitankar and @ganeshie8

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

it does look like a reflection cuz it has horizontal symmetry.. if it was translated just 9 units down, then its both translation and reflection

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay. well thanks :)

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

yw! :)
