What is polarizability?

OpenStudy (dls):

It is the measure of the ease with which the electrons and nuclei can be displacedfrom their average position.. book says this..

OpenStudy (dls):

BUT how can we measure the displacement if we are UNCERTAIN about itsposition?

OpenStudy (dls):

@experimentX

OpenStudy (experimentx):

try reading this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polarizability

OpenStudy (dls):

Is that defintion faulty?

OpenStudy (experimentx):

not really ...

OpenStudy (experimentx):

you don't measure the displacement of single atom. you measure average of all atoms.

OpenStudy (experimentx):

I don't remember it quite clearly ... try searching this is solid state physics book
