midpoint of a line segment (x, 4) and (-2, -2) is (2, 1). What is the value of x? x = 6 x = 4 x = -3 x = -2 4 right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If it's x = 4 then the equation would be y = x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Then the point (2,1) wouldn't be the midpoint

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-3 then, that was my other result

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Nope. the midpoint would have to be greater because the point (2,1) is in the first quadrant. The point (-3,4) is in the second quadrant

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The answer would be 6 in this case

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No problem. If there are answers it's easy to plot the points and it's obvious where the midpoint 2,1 would be if you drew a line.

Between the point you are given and each of the point created with the choices given. There is also another method which doesn't involve knowing the answer choices that i could explain if you need it.
