Which of the following are solutions to the quadratic equation below? Check all that apply. x2 + 7x - 8 = 0 A. -4 B. 1 C. 6 D. -8 E. 2 F. -1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

How many solutions would you expect?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

right can you factor the expression?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Maybe like (x+8) and (x-1) ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That would make sense

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So those are where your solutions come from... the whole expression is equal 0 (which is what a solution means) when either factor is equal to 0, since they are multiplied together.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So (x+8) is equal 0 when x = -8, and (x-1) = 0 when x= 1 So your solutions are x=-8 and x=-1 And you should always check that by sticking them back into the main equation, one at a time to see if you get zero.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OOPS. x=-8 and x=1 not -1 Sorry!!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

typing too fast...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes, makes sense. Thank you very much! I just hate not doing math for awhile and forgetting the stuff and I know. That's what I put!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Getting back into math?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah, I did great when I'm consistent about it. It's been almost a year since I've done A2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It's hard without doing it continually... good luck!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Indeed it is, thanks man!
