While many Scots emigrated for reasons known only to them, the majority of Scots arrived in Colonial America against their will. The first group of Covenanters banished from Great Britain arrived in America in the late seventeenth century. Beginning in 1716, Jacobite Highlanders were banished to the Americas. Continuing persecution encouraged other Scots to emigrate well into the nineteenth century.
