The answer I'd go with is the telegraph. The impact of it against other forms of communication, such as news delivered on horseback, was about as big as the internet's influence on the delivery of news today especially when they made it their business to deliver timely reports on everything happening in the nation.

A typesetter machine and a rotary press were both important, but often used at the end of the process in getting the news out to the masses via newspapers.
