Can someone tell me if this leaves an impression: The Puritans, therefore, did economically achieve the vision of John Winthrop, by setting an example to mankind through efforts, and making new ideas that would extend the period of the colony by embracing the beliefs, such as the training of ministers.
I just need to know if this leaves an impression when reading. I am writing a DBQ, and was told to have sentences that leave an impression.
Is this a thesis?
No. it is a Clincher Sentence.
Do you want me to send the paragraph, that belongs to this clincher sentence.
Sure why not, I don't mind a brief read today =D
The paragraph should give me more incite to leave you with a verdict for your question I presume.
Economically, in the Puritan colony young men were sent to Harvard College, founded in 1638, were they could train to be ministers, and could share their knowledge with the colony. With this additional knowledge they could find new, God approved, ways that increased the economic position of the colony. In 1650, the incorporation of Harvard College was an important part of the Puritan economy, if at the time someone was part of the college, in Middlesex, Cambridge, they would “…be freed from all civil impositions, taxes, and rates: all goods to the said Corporation, or to any scholars thereof pertaining, shall be exempted from all manner to toll, customs, and excise whatsoever.” (Doc E). This allowed for the ministers to bring even greater knowledge to their colony. Many of the Puritan men were yeomen (independent farmers) who worked their own land and centered in small communities where they participated in church related matters and militia training. Puritans set an example to mankind by showing their hard work on the fields. Even though farming was not easy, and was time consuming, it was their way of living. Piety was supposed to bring financial rewards, as long as they worked. Their farming and methods of work were successful, reflecting the strong Puritan values of hard effort, although it was not only done by Puritans themselves. Slaves were common in the Puritan community. The use of slaves was acceptable because they were treated less harshly than in the southern colonies, Puritans provided them with clothes and worried about their being. Puritans expected the slaves to embrace the Christian beliefs as they were part of the Massachusetts colony. The necessity of slaves increased in the period of 1668 to 1762, increasing the prices of slaves, shipped from Barbados, to almost 14 sterling at the end of the period (Doc J). The Puritans, therefore, did economically achieve the vision of John Winthrop, by setting an example to mankind through efforts, and making new ideas that would extend the period of the colony by embracing the beliefs, such as the training of ministers to help the stability of the colony.
Lucy, overall you have a solid paragraph. Spell check that were to where and also that comma after God approved is unnecessary since it isnt a subject by itself but instead the subject to "ways that increased the economic position..." As far as your clincher sentence goes. My only opinion is including the significance of John Winthrop within your paragraph. Not all reader's know who John Winthrop is and when you summarize a person who had significant value to your paragraph it's only right to include some aspects of his "vision" within the paragraph. Then again I am guessing, what ever this is for, your're class must be doing something similar so they will have some idea about John Winthrop.
Okay. Thank you so much! that really helps!
Ahh no problem, thanks for the early read =D.
Also good luck with this assignment.
