In module 7 (Concept of Force), the solution to number 5 of the challenge problems is confusing me. The problem has two configurations: (i) consists of spring with constant "k" hung from a ceiling with mass "m" attached to it, and (ii) has the same spring suspended horizontally with two masses (of "m/2") hung on each side with pulleys. The question asks how much the spring in (ii) will stretch if the spring in (i) stretches 0.1m. Can anyone explain to me how I would get to the solution? I read the solution to the problem, but it did not make sense.
