OpenStudy (anonymous):
SONAR is an acronym for SOund Navigation And Ranging. It basically gives off sound waves & analyses the waves which have bounced back after hitting an object. The time interval between the emission & reception of these sound waves is recorded & used to determine the distance to the object.
