In what way might the expansion of Islam have contributed to the European expansion in the modern era

One way was in how it affected trade routes during the Middle Ages. Spices from India and China had to pass through Muslim held lands and were often sold at a high markup to European traders as a result. The Byzantine Empire had even tried to forge an alternate route to the East. As sailors and explorers from Europe ranged further and further, new lands would be found including the New World eventually sparking a race for everything that it had.
