Was Richard the lionheart a crusader? Did robin hood join the crusaders or fight against them when he joined king richard?

Richard I of England was definitely a crusader. He went along with his rival, King Philip II of France, to fight for the Holy Land in the Third Crusade and nearly bankrupted his own country in getting everything he needed to go on his adventure.

As for whether Robin Hood joined the crusades, I think that's just clever storytelling for the movies. The legend itself doesn't put him in the crusades at all, or fighting alongside King Richard though he has been portrayed as a supporter back home in England. That's just something made up for Kevin Costner's and Russell Crowe's films. 

But because the story itself can be pretty ambiguous on certain details, there's plenty of opportunity for the writers to put their own spin on Robin Hood. It's not so much accuracy as it is whether or not it'll make a great movie!
