A kindergarden has square mats in two colors, red and blue. The ratio of the perimeter of the red mat to the perimeter of the blue mat is 1 : 2. The area of the red mat is 9 square feet. What is the area of the blue mat? a. 9 square feet b. 18 square feet c. 81 square feet d. 36 square feet

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay so the ratio is 2:1 (red to blue). It says in this question that blue is 36 sq. feet. So, all we have to do it *2 to make it match the ratio. 36*2=72. once you put this back in the ratio 72:36, it comes back to 2:1 when you simplify so it's correct :) The answer is A

It doesnt say that in the question? where does it say that blue is 36 sq?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im confused...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the answer is 36 feet squared

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay. but why? can you explain please? :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ya sure

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the perimeter ratio is 1:2 area of red mat= 9 square feet it means that each side of square is 3 feet now the blue mat is twice in parameter ratio to red mat thus each side must be double of that of red mat thus each side of blue mat become 3x2=6 feet so the area of blue mat is 6x6=36 square feet

oh! I get it now! =) Thank you so much! :)

you r welcome
