Read the statements shown below. If a polygon has three sides, it is a triangle. If an angle of a triangle measures 90° it is a right triangle. Beth constructed a triangle in the geometry class. Based on the given statements, which is a valid argument? It can be concluded that Beth drew a scalene triangle. It can be concluded that Beth drew a right triangle. It cannot be concluded that Beth drew a polygon with three sides. It cannot be concluded that Beth drew a triangle with an angle measure of 90°.

OpenStudy (cgreenwade2000):

Just another logic question. Read the choices. Can you say she drew a right triangle? Can you say she drew a scalene triangle?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i think it's B cause it can be concluded..

OpenStudy (cgreenwade2000):

I drew a triangle today. Do you know if my triangle is a right triangle?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

umm lol no

OpenStudy (cgreenwade2000):

Then you can't say Beth's triangle is a right triangle.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohhh so maybe D then?

OpenStudy (cgreenwade2000):

Can you say that she drew a polygon with 3 sides?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ummm idk, i really don't get this

OpenStudy (cgreenwade2000):

>_> She drew a triangle. We know that triangles have 3 sides. So we know that she drew a polygon with 3 sides.

OpenStudy (cgreenwade2000):

Therefore, yes. D is our answer. We cannot conclude A or B. There isn't enough information. C is false because we know she drew a triangle. So, D is our answer because it is true that we can't tell if she drew a right triangle.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wow ok thanks for your help, sorry for being so slow lol, maths my worst nightmare..

OpenStudy (cgreenwade2000):

Logic is more of a general subject than a math subject. It just goes with reading and comprehending the information and being able to make inferences and statements about what you have read.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well that's true and then again i suck with inferring that's what my English teacher is trying to help me with but I won't get into that lol

OpenStudy (cgreenwade2000):

There really isn't a lot to teach. You just have totry harder.
