determine the domain

w(x)=x-4overx^2-49

i know the answer is

x is an element of (-infinity, -7)u(-7,7)u(7,+infinity)

but i dont understand the (-7,7) part
in the graph the vertical asymptote are -7,7 and i thought the domain was everything the x can be or is. and x is not 7 or-7. i am confused.
