The pilot of a plane wants to fly 800 miles east and 155 miles north of the airport. To the nearest degree, in what direction should he head?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

tan x = 155/800, solve for x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The answer will be in degrees north of due east.

|dw:1348628216142:dw| SOH-CAH-TOA Looking at the drawing, which sides do you have? Opposite over adjacent. So, opposite over adjacent gives you the tangent of the angle. The arctangent of that number will be the angle you are looking for.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i got 11º northeast

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That is 11º north of due east, or in airplane lingo, at 79º off of north (north is considered to be 0º).

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you very much sir

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Actually, in airplane lingo, that's heading zero-seven-niner. (Former private pilot). :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that is big money there

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Big money out the window...very expensive hobby.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Former pilot here too. I didn't want to get overly technical for this problem. Big money out the window for me too.
