According to the info page any 2.5.x or 2.6.x version of Python will work, but 3.0 versions are NOT compatible. I dont think there will be major differences (specially in Syntax) with your proposed version. Other Online Education alternatives such as coursera's LTP The fundamentals is based on Python 3 and looks more basic than this course but syntax is totally different, you'll just have to try
