For what value of b will the polynomial P(x)= 4x³-3x²+bx+6 have the same remainder when it is divided by (x-1) and (x+3)

OpenStudy (asnaseer):

this requires the same knowledge as the last question you posted: http://openstudy.com/updates/506384e5e4b0583d5cd38258 but you seemed to have closed that question without responding - does that mean you know how to solve it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no i thought i posted the wrong question

OpenStudy (asnaseer):

so, do you know what the remainder theorem states?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes, but i dont have the value of b nor do i have the value of the remainder

OpenStudy (asnaseer):

given some function f(x), what does the remainder theorem say the remainder will equal if f(x) is divided by (x-a)?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it will equal zero

OpenStudy (asnaseer):

no - you need to first understand this theorem properly

OpenStudy (asnaseer):

have a look here to brush up on it: http://www.purplemath.com/modules/remaindr.htm then come back and try this question again. let me know if you are still stuck after this and I will try and guide you further.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay thanks :)

OpenStudy (asnaseer):

yw :)
