Can someone explain in detail how to factor trinomials?

zepdrix (zepdrix):

lol ok ok ill try :)

zepdrix (zepdrix):

so you need help factoring trinomials into a pair of binomials?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

zepdrix (zepdrix):

mmm im trying to think of a good way to explain it, do you have any example problems by chance that we could try? :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

m^(2)+2m-24

zepdrix (zepdrix):

So you want numbers that MULTIPLY to give you -24, and numbers that ADD to +2(the coefficient on the m), i cant really think of an ez way to explain it D: i know there are a few little tricks, but im not too familiar with them. sometimes you just need it to jump out at you. for example, lets think of some numbers > 12x2=24.. hmm can 12 and 2 add/subtract to give me 2? hmmm i dont think so 8x3 = 24.. can 8 +/- 3 give me 2? hmmmm no :c 6x4 = 24.. can 6 and 4 give me 2? :O hmmmm!!

Sooo... (m+6)(m-4) ???
