What is an ionic bond? What is a covalent bond?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

In an ionic bond, one or more electrons is "given up" by on atom or molecule to the other and in a covalent bond, one or more electrons is "shared" between atoms or molecules.

Ionic bonding also happens between a metal and a non - metal for example sodium to oxygen. Covalent bonding happens between two non-metals like nitrogen and chlorine.
