The distance between Kansas City, Missouri, and Denver is 600 mi. On a certain wall map, this is represented by a length of 2.4 ft. On the map, how many feet would there be between Memphis and Philadelphia, two cities that are actually 1,000 mi apart?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2.4x=600 x=250 use that to find the distance it would be on the map 250x=1000 x=4 feet

I tried 600 as well.. and got 250 the same, but never figured it to continue to be 250x4.. can you tell me how that works so i can understand it better?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It probably is that simple now but I still seem to be missing something in my head, haha..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hmm not sure what you're asking...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah i think im just confusing myself.. let me try to explain myself a bit better.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think Im getting confused with the setup, you see i tried 600 mi / 2.4 ft as well and got 250. But I never thought that 250 can be used to divide by itself and 1000 to be 4 feet. How does this come to be the solution?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Hmm, well you're just taking the information you know and saying, 2.4 times some unknown number gives me 600. After you solve for that it gives you 250, then use that info to get the distance on the map which is just 250x=1000, divide both sides by 250 and it just leaves you with x=4....im still not sure if i answered your question...haha

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think you did, and with this, now i finish my packet! Thanks so much! =D
