Ruby's father has curly hair and her mother has straight hair. Ruby, however, has wavy hair. What could be the reason for this?

inheritance.....it does not have to be the parent people can inherit physical traits from older generation as well as the current one for example, my great grandmother has light brown eyes and my grandmother has  blue eyes but my mom and my dad has brown eyes and i have light brown eyes because i have inherited from my G granma.

have you heard of incomplete dominance
the wavy hair nature is due to incomplete dominance as ruby has inherited an allele for curly hair from her father and the other allele for straight hair from her mother.....
