They did not want to break with Great Britain. They hoped for a settlement with the British government. Although they did call for a boycott of all trade with Britain until Parliament repealed their taxes, and especially the Coercive Acts. But in April occurred the Battles of Lexington and Concord. When they met again in Phila. on May 10, 1775 at the second Continental Congress they were in a different mood. They voted for independence from the Mother Country.
