Are we supposed to be doing the 2008 course materials or wait for new problem sets etc to be posted on Oct. 1?

I would say that the 2008's lectures are still a good way to begin. But I think you'll be advise for the exercices by email.

They are seperate things but the 2008/2011 materials are good for extra practice if you feel you need it.
