Your tongue is what forms food into small balls. It does this to make it easier to swallow the food. And then it pushes them into the stomach, through the esophagus.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Food is formed into small balls as it goes down the esophagus in a process called paristalsis, it then enters the stomach.

@hheston I read an article here that suggests that food is already in the form of a small ball, before it is swallowed into the esophagus. It refers to the small ball of food as a "bolus." It's a wiki article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peristalsis The last paragraph on page 79 of this book also says that the tongue is what shapes food into a "bolus." http://highered.mcgraw-hill.com/sites/dl/free/0072347325/80938/mhb8ch05.pdf Is that right?
