Which of the following statements are true regarding functions? A. A function is a relation in which multiple values of the input variable are paired with at least one of the output variable. B. A sequence is a function whose domain is the set of rational numbers. C. The vertical line test may be used to determine whether a relation is a function. D. The horizontal line test may be used to determine whether a function is one-to-one. ***Choose all that apply :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think C and D are two of the answers.... I'm not 100% sure tho... am i right about those 2?? and what about the others? :O

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

C is correct, the vertical line test is a visual test to see if a relation is a function

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

D is also correct, if a relation passes the vertical line test, it's a function if a function passes the horizontal line test, then it's a one-to-one function

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

what do you think about B

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sorry my computer froze but its good now haha hold on lemme seee

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

does B apply also??? cuz domain is rational #s and range is irrational??

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

take a look at this page http://www.acadia.k12.la.us/view/899.pdf

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

tell me what a sequence is (according to that page)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it is a function whose domain is a set of all natural #s

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so B is false

OpenStudy (anonymous):

right?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

yes, B is false because the rational numbers and the natural numbers are two completely different sets

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is A wrong too then?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

hmm A doesn't clearly nail down what a function really is sure a function could match that description, but a relation that isn't a function could also match the description

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so the asnwer to this is C,D ?? :D

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

so I'd say it's false

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

yes it is

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yay :) thx!

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
