I am studying Discrete Math Structure, currently the topic is on Set Operations. One of the HW questions is: If c(A) = 16, c(B) = 29, and c(A intersect B) = 9, then... c (A Union B) is = ______? What is c? I don't understand the notation c(A) :( I can't find c(A) notation in my textbook :/

OpenStudy (tamtoan):

try this, draw 2 circles, intersecting each other, the one part belong to both circle (intersection) is 9, the 2 circles with 16 and 29 ...so the outside part of circle 16 is 7 and the other is 20...try to figure out union of A and B ?

OpenStudy (tamtoan):

think of it like this ...set A has 16 elements, set B has 29 elements and 9 of them are in both set.

OpenStudy (tamtoan):

and c is the count of each set

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Count! Thank you so much :D I figured it out. It is 36.

OpenStudy (tamtoan):

:) very good, enjoy
