If you are in high school, I would recommend "Biology" by Campbell Reece. Any of the many editions are fine. If you take "biology" to mean "molecular biology" and are in college, I recommend "Molecular Cell Biology" by Lodish and friends.

What about microbiology @blues ?

blues · Answer

When I was in intro microbiology I had the Brock Book of Microorganisms. Sold it when I finished the class which should indicate my "meh" feeling about it. It wasn't bad, wasn't good either. If that makes any sense.
